NEW RELEASES - APRIL-MAY EDITION 002

Fila Brazillia
The Life And Times Of Phoebas Brumal

Tucked neatly away in the bowels of Hull, Fila Brazilia's Dave McSherry and Steve Cobby have been quietly, albeit busily, ploughing their own furrow since 1990. The latest chapter of their stridently independent career picks up where they left off with 2002's 'Jump Leads' album.

Essentially Fila are a house act although with the musicianly ability to play around more with the 4/4 framework than most in a genre which seems to predominated by lazy, unimaginative wine bar tedium.
The titles, including Underpuppy, La Boulangerie Digitale and Bantamweight Werewolf, give a clue to their more playful approach and the result is an album to which you can shake a hoof at without difficulty as well enjoy in more sedate surroundings.

They know their stuff and veer from skiffly disco to a less manic Moloko to the deeper funk/house of Bullshit which uses the vocals of Papa V to boss effect.
Worth checking out as well is the cut and paste madness of the sleeve by Sheffield's Designer's Republic, a combination of Goon Show verbosity and Erica Roe's boobs. Nice.

Emma Rugg
Isolated Impression

A year after its local release Emma Rugg’s debut album finally gets a national release courtesy of friendly label, MI5 Records. It’s quite strange reviewing an album that I have already been listening to for so long, I know the words and everything. In fact if I can I’ll quote myself, ‘Isolated Impression is a beautiful acoustic lullaby to love and life that shows a startling maturity both musically and emotionally. Emma’s voice is so haunting and distinctive, soft yet pervasive, you’ll only have to hear this album once and you’ll recognise her from the first time next time’, and that’s still holds true. The soft and gentle melodies often belie the strength and insight of the lyrics. Emma is the embodiment of the oxymoron, fragile strenth. The album was hard fought for a long 6 months busking around town to fund its recording and then establishing her own record label for it’s initial release, it’s very affirming to see it gain the interest it deserves. Favourites include opener ‘As You Go’ and the lovely lilting ‘In Your Universe’ as well as the slightly more brooding ‘Read Your Mind’, like the rest of the album exhibiting remarkable musicianship. Ok there may be a flourish of talented young acoustic singer songwriters at the moment, all pretty much down to Radio 2, but that doesn’t mean there can’t be another. Besides, trust me, Emma is much more than a one trick pony there is a lot more to come from this girl yet.
